Conversion Table Interest

Hi,
I’m currently working on a software that can be used to get a mix ratio using two or more paints to match a target paint. The bi-product is that I get the best match for paints between different brands.
I don’t know if there would be any interest in here to have a web page to look up the best matching paint for a paint in your preferred paint brand?
Nerd stats:
I’m using both a pro colorimeter and a pro spectrophotometer to obtain data from dried completely opaque paint swatches.
I’m using CIE Delta 2000 to compare paints in CIE LAB.
I have the whole Army Painter, Instar, Citadel Foundation and Citadel 49xxx(the small hard plastic boltershell pot with flip-top lid and blue label with white text that was released 2003 that replaced the boltershell pots with screw-top and beige label with black text that was released in 1998)
I also have the complete Citadel Base paint range and an almost complete Citadel Layer range.
I many paint pots from Vallejo’s Game and Model range.
I also have incomplete range of the Citadel Classic range and 83xxx that was produced by HMG and the infamous Citadel 47xxx range mentioned above together with the 49xxx.
deltaE2000 is the distance between two colours that are compared to eachother, a value of 0 means that the compared colours are the same.

deltaE definition:
<1: Not Perceptible by human eyes.
1-2: Perceptible through close observation.
2-10: Perceptible at a glance.
11-49: Colors are more similar than opposite.
100: Colors are exact opposite.

A little taste of Citadel 49xxx equivalents. (Citadel 49xxx, Army Painter, Citadel Base, Citadel Layer, Instar Vintage, Instar Paint and VGC are measured with a spectrophotometer at Illuminant: D65, Observer: 2deg)
The outer rectangle is the Citadel49xxx and the inner is the closest matched colour from the paint brand above the colour swatch.
Three attachments are obviously the maximum, so I can unfortunately not add comparison swatches for more than the three I added.

The DeltaE2000 values are calculated using the CIE-L*ab and not the RGB values since the sRGB spectrum is much narrower than CIE-L*ab, what this means is that although the sRGB values for paints are very close, they can differ a lot more in the CIE-L*ab colour space.

Lower DeltaE2000 values are better. With a DeltaE2000 value around 1.0 between two paints, it’s extremely hard to see the difference between them even if you have the two paint swatches beside eachother.

Citadel49xxx was released in May of 2003, which means that all painting guides in White Dwarf from this date used the 49xxx until the next change which happened in ~2010.

The sRGB values are calculated from the reflectance values.

I’m in the process of completing my Citadel Layer range and I will updating the comparison list when I have added the Layer paints I currently have measured with the spectrophotometer. I will buy the missing paints next week and finally update the list after that. Then I will concentrate at getting the whole Instar range measured with the spectrophotometer and update the list regarding the beat matches with Instar.

After that I will create a new thread for the Citadel Foundation range measured with the spectrophotometer and compare With AP, Citadel Base and Layer and Instar.

After that I will create a new thread with the Citadel 83xxx range, the large hexagon pots with the rubber flip lid, it’s incomplete but I will measure what I have.

After that the Citadel Classic range will get its own thread.

Kind Regards
Kalle

That is some great work ... feellike this should be stucksomewherehandy. How often do you see someone asking for "what paint is closest to ..."

Thanks Harry :)

I will update the Citadel Layer closest matches when I get hold of the last 11 paints in that range.
There are 80 paints in the Layer range that are not metallics, which makes the comparison with this range time consuming.
The steps I go through to get the values for one paint:
1. Buy the paint, easy but a very costly step depending on brand. This applies for currently available piants.
2. Stir the paint and shake the paint thoroughly with an agitator in the Pro Shaker and manually.
3. Paint a swatch on thick cardboard, it takes about seven to ten layers of slightly diluted paint to be sure it’s opaque.
4. Let it dry for about 12-24hours.
5. Measure the paint with the spectrophotometer, 10 measurements.
6. Type the values ranging from 380nm to 730nm in my paint mixing software.
7. Run the program to get the closest match to the target paint.

For an oop paint step 1 becomes even more costly and time consuming, and depending on the state it is in, an additional step of reviving the paint needs to be conducted.

Hi,

Army Painter, Citadel Base, Citadel Layer and Instar Vintage equivalents are complete.
Next up are the Instar Paint equivalents.
The Vallejo Game Color range will be added after the Instar Paint range.

Thanks :)
With my background it comes naturally ;)
This as I mentioned in my first post is just a small part that is necessary for my hobby project sw that can blend paint to reach a target colour.

By the way I have produced 40 paint swatches for VGC, so am still missing ~45 counting the extra opaque also.

Hi,
While creating paint swatches, I have noticed that my "opaque" swatches wasn't as opaque as I wanted them to be. So in the near future I will add additional layers to all swatches that isn't opaque enough. This is mostly to get the correct values for my paint blender software.
This will maybe change some values in the equivalence chart.

I noticed this when we had a electrical failure in the neighbourhood where I live and we needed to use flashlights. I took one of the white cardstock sheets that I had painted some swatches for Vallejo Game Color. When I lit up the backside with my pretty powerful flash light I could se coloured swatches in some places, all swatches should show as more or less black in a dark room when you light them up from behind.

All colorimeters and spectrophotmeters use light, and they measure the reflection that reaches the photosensor. The problem is when a swatch is not completely opaque, the light reaches the surface underneath and the reflected light is now distorted by whatever colour the surface underneath has. I think the measuring instruments and the software that comes with it takes this into consideration but I can't be sure. My software's mathematics relies on completely opaque swatches where the reflectance curve is not at all distorted by the surface that is underneath the swatches.

Ps.
VGC Dead White is a pain to get opaque, I have painted 30 layers and it is still not opaque.
VGC Scarlet Blood has them same transparency problem, which I guess all other light coloured paints have.

Hi,

I have added the Instar Alpha range to the conversion table. Instar will release seven more paints for this range and when I get hold of them, I will update the Instar Alpha conversions.

That is correct, because that is the closest match to Tentacle Pink amongst the Citadel Base paints ;)
If yoo look at the deltaE value it’s pretty high which means that you shouldn’t use it as an equivalent.
There are no close matches in the Base range.

I saw the high delta; I guess it surprised me that something in the red or purple tones wasn’t closer.

I’d be interested in more conservation on this topic, if you’re amenable.

GameThug, I guess you meant conversation and not conservation ;)
Ask away, by the way there are some reds and pinks but they are pretty dark compared to tentacle pink and that also weighs in when you compare colours using deltaE2000.

Hi Kalle,

Long shot, but maybe you'll still see an email alert for this forum thread over a year after you started it :)

Did you have any luck with your original goal? :

I’m currently working on a software that can be used to get a mix ratio using two or more paints to match a target paint. The bi-product is that I get the best match for paints between different brands.

I'm new to the forum and the website is acting a little weird (no http security), so I only see your embedded lists of colors with their close matches and ΔE values. Did you also compile a spreadsheet? or did you have any other attachments to your discussions that I can't see? And were you able to find "theoretically ideal" (depending on pigment loads) mixtures of 2-3 paints to match any missing hue? I've been reading up a lot on this concept, and it seems like you should be able to derive a paint mixing ratio (with some magic matrix conversions!) using the CIE color spaces since any color can be created from 2 existing pigments that are the endpoints of a line intersecting the missing color's CIE values (or in the case of 3 existing pigments, if the missing color lies within their triangle).

Awesome that you have access to some laboratory-grade colorimeters! I've been eyeing some ~$200 handheld units on amazon, but I'm unsure of their quality and accuracy with dried paints, and why repeat what someone else has already done better and with more experience?

Hope you're well and look forward to an update!

You could make mixing table only theoretically since, as mentioned above, pigment load but filler quality also. Because you could have exact same amounts of paint, that on eye look same but as quality of paint is different you wont get the same colour. I did mention before that most extreme example that I ever saw was when I mix W&N Designers gouache with cheap red gouache ( Can't remember the brand, was some time ago, wasn't supermarket school grade, both are tube gouaches ), that W&N just eat that poor red. Then I mix both cheap with same amount and that pink wasn't even close in lightness.

Also there could be problem with hues that you see on screen isn't the best representation of colour. Just look at Citadels range on their page. I mean, they're not like that even when dried.
