Apparently the Blanchitsu effect on many old paintings isn't a result of painter's style but of ageing varnish.

If anything, the faux-antiquity of the look of is part and parcel of the romantic gaze.

Ever notice how in period films everything is old and faded, rather than fresh and new as it would have been?
