Harry does Frostgrave

Amidst the frozen ruins of an ancient city, wizards battle in the hopes of discovering the treasures of a fallen empire. In the fantasy skirmish wargame Frostgrave, each player takes on the role of a wizard from one of ten schools of magic, and builds his band of followers. The wizard's apprentice usually accompanies his master, and more than a dozen other henchman types are available for hire, from lowly thugs to heavily armored knights and stealthy thieves. Wizards can expand their magical knowledge by unlocking ancient secrets and may learn up to 80 different spells.

While individual games of Frostgrave are quick and can easily be played in an hour or two, it is by connecting them into an ongoing campaign that players will find the most enjoyment. The scenarios given in the book are merely the beginning of the limitless adventures that can be found amidst the ruins of the Frozen City.

So I am pretty excited about this little game.
I thought I would start a thread to show folks what i get up to.

This is the table I have pulled together ... some bits I had ... some new bits.
It is a 4ft square table ... with a snow effect painted on ... not that clear in the pictures.
All the pieces are 'flats' so I can move this all around however i like for each game.
The raised 'snow drifts' are all difficult terrain and the paths in between are easy going.
Seems to give the maze like quality described.
It worked pretty well in our first 'test game'

Hope you like it ...

Most impressive!

I am not normally a fan of 'grey' stone, but it certainly works for this setting.
That set-up gives a very sinister feel.

Your table looks great. It captures the feeling of the ancient, frozen, dead city very well.

I, too, am excited for this game. In fact I grabbed the same Reaper "Dragons Don't Share" box on the cheap just for the ruined tower and stair. Looks great in your setup and very versatile. Here's hoping mine comes out as nice!

Thanks felas.
Much appreciated. I am glad you like it.

@Mason The thing with the monochrome it really does make it seem a bit sinister but the real result is ... the minis ... they shine like jewels against this backdrop.

I found a couple of images on the internet that really did it for me .... I was going for this ....

I was aiming for a 'wizards quarter' of the city where there were the ruins of one wizards tower after another.... from a time when wizards from different schools had lived and studied together in the great city and a human necromancer was neighbour to the Elven elemenatlist and the Dwarf enchanter such was the cosmopolitan culture of the city at its height.

@Matt ... I painted that 'Dragons don't share' piece in less than half an hour'. It took me longer to glue it together than it did to paint .... never mind how long it took to clean up the mould lines .... and it is still a bit bendy. But worth the effort ... and cheap as chips compared to a GW scenery piece....and you get the bonus of a flippin big dragon ... which looks like it will paint up nicely as a frost dragon. (Thaats where I am going with it anyway).

Lovely table Harry. How good is the game? How would it compare to Mordheim?
Great fun.
It is Mordheim in the snow.
The rules are not quite as in depth but that makes it very quick to get into.
The whole thing is based around the magic user character so it is a lot about the spells and only the wizard and apprentice can advance and develop as a character ... the warband can develop as you invest loot in more specialists.
But the big difference is you can pick it up for less than £10  ..... and you can play with your existing collection of minis very easily.

Here are some of the Giants I have painted that will fit nicely in this setting:

his is a plastic He-man toy re purposed as a Frost Giant / Giant yeti type thing:

There is actually some nice detail on this guy for a big plastic toy:
Great fur texture to paint!

As you can see ... he is huge:

After a very productive weekend I have loads of new stuff to post.

BUT ... here are the last of the models I already had painted that are perfect for Frostgrave:

The yeti's :

and the sabretooth cats:

So for Frostgrave you need some staues ... for one of the scenarios in the book. (But they will come in handy for other scenarios and look great as additional scenery in the city).

So I knew I had some of these so I dug them out and Frostgraved them up a bit.

For statues I naturally went to my Reaper BONES from Kickstarter. There are some of those that I can not see me using either because they just don't do it for me as a mini OR because they are a bit big for scale ... i mean there is heroic and then there is HEROIC!

Anyway I picked out a few to be turned to srone:

Couple of wizards ... obviously:

A couple of eveil fighters:

and four heroes of the city:

As you can see I have based these (on 25mm) and none are fixed to the plinth so I can swap the statues depending in the scenario:

A couple of things I have ideas for already are a Dwarf Enchanter .... and a Vampire statue.

Here you go:

The beauty of this set up is if I ever need a specific statue for a scenario then I am all sorted for the plinth.... couldm't be easier to do more statues.

Here they are together and here they are dotted around the city ... extra things to hide behind so as not to get shot.
