I recently got a copy of Ravening Hordes and was convinced that it contained some example armies but cannot see it anywhere was it a seperate supplement or something the example armies would love to see it as it gives me something to aim for.

I can’t think of anything from that era. There was the Broken Nose goblin list in about WD 87, which had example models, but nothing like the example armies in Warhammer Armies.

OK, I know this is unlikely, but I'm just throwing this out there.
Is there any chance you are thinking of the 3rd edition Warhammer Armies book?

My copy of Ravening Hordes has an a pinkish A3 size flyer called Ravening Hordes: Five Sample Armies, with Orcs, Dark Elves, Elves and Norse - just example army lists with a few black and white photos of the miniatures and a mail-order offer for each army (147 Norse for £50!)
