Anarchy in the UH (Underhive fun using Space Hulk rules)

OK then folks, I've spent some time sorting out what the plans are for this game.

Anarchy In the UH
Riots in the Underhive! Gangs prowling the streets! Lord Helmawr retreats to his impregnable bastion!

The Underhive of Palatine Spire on Necromunda has erupted in an outpouring of civil unrest following the assassination of key leaders in the manufactorum levels who were petitioning Lord Helmawr for improved workers' rights. Necromundan civilians have taken to the corridors and communal zones of the Underhive and are protesting, looting and burning everything they encounter. Lord Helmawr has sealed off the upper levels of the spire and is marshalling his forces to wrest control back.

A few unfortunate upper hivers and VIPs have found themselves stranded in the Underhive. Lord Helmawr has instructed those gangs in his employ to escort the VIPs safely to the elevator shaft of his southern bastion. Those which succeed will receive a significant bounty and favourable future trading conditions.

I've adapted the premise of the game a little bit after some discussion with a few other folks, and seeing how well the narrative works on some of the post-apocalyptic zombie games doing the rounds. Essentially, the the game will be played on a gridded board, using the Space Hulk rules - there are several reasons for this, mainly pace and ease of picking up the system.

I figure that we will be able to run an effective game with up to 6 players per game: 4 x gang escorts and 2 players controlling the rioting masses. I'm more than happy to run the game a couple of times if we have more people wanting to join in.

What do you need to bring?
I will be providing the terrain, dice, various counters, VIP models and rioting masses. I will also have spare gangs if needed.

If you are bringing a gang, you will need 5 models:
1 Leader
3 Gangers
1 Ganger with a special weapon

In game terms, they will be counted as a standard Space Hulk terminator squad (Sergeant, 3 Terminators, 1 Terminator with heavy flamer). I'm not worried about whether your gangers have pistols rather than ranged weapons, or whether your heavy flamer is actually a plasma gun on your model - just as long as it's obviously identifiable in game.

Game 1

Gangs
1) cheetor (Redemptionists)
2) Asslessman (Venators
3) antipixi (Ash Waste Nomads)
4) Greater Harlequin

Underhive Rioters
1) Niibl
2) Tatsujin

Game 2

Gangs
1) Chico (Pit Slaves)
2) ramshackle curtis (cyber humans)
3) Skarsnik (Hive Gangers)
4) butchboy73

Underhive Rioters
1) Just John

Sounds interesting. I could be tempted. I'm angling for more smaller games next year.

My initial thoughts are that there would be a big hall with a scavvy king throne and shacks. Small gangs of hivers would need to penetrate the network of corridors with varying objectives (capture the king, kill scavvies, kill opposing gangers).

Hive gangers would equate to terminators; scavvies (without ranged weapons) would equate to genestealers.

I guess a manageable number would be 4-6 gangs plus the scavvies :)

5-strong John. It might get unmanageable if they're larger.

Excellent, I should be able to make up a gang of some sort then.

I was planning on doing a standard 1st edition Space Hulk game anyway, because I think it's an excellent rule system. If this falls through then I'll probably do that, if not I can contribute the board pieces from 2 x Space Hulk + 1 x Deathwing and Genestealer expansions . Let me know if this would help.

I was thinking about whether having more players than the classic 1 on 1 would make it unmanageable, but if the timed turns are used, then by definition the action could be pretty snappy. All the players on one side could take their turn simultaneously. The deliberate interleaving of activations could be specifically forbidden to prevent abuse of this. By the way, I hope we are talking 1st edition where CPs can be used for actions in the enemy turn and not the later simplification (abomination) of 2nd edition that didn't allow that.

Thanks Scalene...board pieces might well be required. I drew up a rough plan yesterday and we'll need a fair few!

Turn sequence is something I've been thinking about & would prefer to avoid simultaneous turns, simply because of the interaction between factions. As for CP in an opponent's turn, I honestly think it is just too messy with up to 8 players plus the GM (scavvy/stealer player) :)

Initiative cards for the players worked really well for the Sensei and Gorkamorka games this year. It also added an element of tactical choice deciding whether to risk your opponent being drawn first.

As for CPs in opponents turn, there is no real need as overwatch covers most situations. Maybe allow players a set number of "unjam" tokens to use during the game.

Already there on initiative cards Chris...can't believe I'd never used them before - its a must in any multiplayer game.
