• Welcome to the Golden Gobbo painting competition. If you'd like to read some of the ancient history you can on the Realm of Chaos 80s blog.

This competition is held some years and you'll find threads here describing how to enter and when the competition is running (typically after BOYL each year).

Other than the fame and wonderment of your peers there is often a prize kindly donated and you'll have the wonder of being awarded badges for your profile here.

GG 2013 The Second Golden Goblin Competition?

Are we definitely going to do monsters then? I still think a deadline in early January is the fairest as it gives people the Christmas and New Year period to work on entries if they have heavy going jobs and family commitments (like I now have!)

I think monsters is a great theme, and a january deadline sounds good!

Thanks for organizing the thing!
I didn't make it for the first GG so hope this time nothing can stop me 8-)

That said, can I suggest an annual competition? That way we all know long in advance when we've got to get stuff done by? I know you bunch are a lot of prolific painters, but maybe the GGs could be something a bit special. Also might give time to get the word out and maybe get some prizes in order?
Agreed: getting more occassions to participate in contest is cool but I've noticed when you get contest like every second month lots of people just get bored and pass them.

I have mine cleaned and prepped, but not yet primed. It's not a very spectacular mini but one I've wanted to paint for years.

It would be cool to have a Goblin League running for the full year, with a leaderboard.
At the end of the year, we arrange The Golden Gobbo.
The top three in the Goblin League get bonus points in the Golden Gobbo.

Orlygg, how have you planned the voting system? Individual rating, 1-10, as previously suggested?

I really dislike having external documents to open up. A lot of us use mobile platforms and while possible to read a word document or PDF it's a bit more faffing about and more data traffic than needed. I think it would be better if the entries are confined to their individual forum thread, and limited in size to three pics of a max resolution of 1024x768.

Edit: Would be nice to have the rules on the forums too...

Fantastic that people are already excited about the prepping and selecting of models. For me, a competition like the Golden Goblins is really about this process; the selection, the painting, the preparing, knowing full well that the work will be judged by a peer group, rather than the 'I must Winz AT ALLLLL COstSSSSS!!!!!!!!11111' mentality.

I guess its about being really creative and focused in the hobby well love too!

As asked, I have included the regulations below. I'm sending this via email in the ICT Suite at school rather sneakily as my children investigate consecutive numbers. In the future should we be setting these regulations for entry as a sticky? I assume so.

Additionally, I have had a number of emails requesting if it is possible to enter more than ONE entry to the competition. Personally, I see no issue with this but I thought I'd get a bit of feedback first from you longbeards of Oldhammer.

Regulations for Entry

1) Miniatures entered into the competition can be from any manufacturer or even private sculpts but need to be in spirit of the 'citadelesque' nature of Warhammer and Rogue Trader mythos. Original Citadel, Marauder, Ral Partha, Grenadier etc miniatures are, obviously, the main focus of these blogs but don't be afraid to enter something else if your really passionate about it.

Considering that we are drawing on the 1980s and early 90s as inspiration that gives you a great deal of freedom. One thing that is important in Oldhammer is the freedom to do what YOU want with no restrictions about paint schemes or army lists etc to interfere with your imagination.

2) Miniatures are to be based monsters, preferably mounted on a square 40-50mm base (the monster base) though there is no real restriction on the shape of the base.

3) Miniatures need to be accompanied with full stats, equipment and narrative 'fluff' background story!

Obviously the stats and equipment are pretty straight forwards, but as Warhammer 3rd edition is the main focus of Oldhammer, 3rd edition stats are preferred but are not necessary. Feel free to use 1st, 2nd or even WFRP stats if you prefer. Rogue Trader stats are also very welcomed. As for the fluffy background story, there is no need to write Lord of the Rings. I would suggest a word limit of about 300 words to make reading backgrounds easier for us all but to give a little bit of space for development if you so wish. Obviously, the theme of your background is up to you but existence in, relevance to the worlds of Warhammer 3rd and Rogue Trader are preferred.

4) The winner is to be judged by us all.

Voting will be organised over at the specialist Oldhammer forum after the closing date has passed (5th January 2013). If you are unaware of this essential resource for retro lead and classic Warhammer gaming then follow this link (http://forum.oldhammer.org.uk/)

5) Have fun!

Get out there and hunt through that mountain of lead and find that figure you have been meaning to paint for years but haven't because it doesn't fit in with the army or armies you are currently working on. The emphasis is on creativity here rather than straight up flash painting, after all, there are other competitions out there for being anal about your skills. DON'T FEEL INTIMIDATED TO ENTER!

6) KEEP THINGS SECRET! In the spirit of competition, don't post WIP on blogs or forums.

Let's keep things nice and secretive before the big day. I am sure you will agree with me when I say the thing that excites me the most about this little competition is having a good look at what other collectors and painters enter.

7) Send in your entries as jpeg images (or equivalent) with written texts, rules and equipment lists attached as a Word document.

This should stop the problem of not having images available to browse when voting. In the previous competition, entries arrived in a large number of different formats. This should make things easier for us at this end and should ultimately raise your viewing pleasure after the closing date has passed.

Launch Date: 1st November 2012
Closing Date: 5th January 2013
Voting 6th - 20th January

Winner Announced 21st January

So to make it clear: display plinth is not an option?

Why not? Clearly says "no real restriction on the shape of the base". =)

I'm not too keen on the idea of having several entries per contestant. I feel the whole idea of a competition is for everyone to run at once, not for some people to run several times.

I agree, one entry each does seem fair. We don't want to be overloaded with entries after all, and one entry means you can put special effort into one mini... plenty of opportunities for other entries at other times.

On the subject of bases, I see no reason why a display plinth shouldn't be ok, especially if it was surmounted by a gaming base. I guess the idea is to try and keep it as one monster rather than it becoming a diorama... something my entry is getting perilously close to becoming!

Are we going to seek a new category for miniatures each time, or should we stick to a rota of categories? Say for example: Single figure (october), Monster (january), Command Group (april), Battle Scene (july).

Yarp - one entry per competioneer.

Fimm - shouldn't we have random D100 tables to decide on the category for the next competition ;)

Well I wasn't planning to make a diorama, but sadly I don't think I will ever use THIS model in gaming so just wanted to make it look decent behind the glass :)
So the plinth it is...

YES. Yes, we should... can we think of 100 categories though?!

And maybe we should make each entrant roll on sub-tables to wittle down to the exact figure they can paint?!

D100 roll to decide category: 30= Mounted figures
D20 roll to decide race: 14= slann
D3 roll to pick rider: 2= Mixtecas
D3 roll to pick cold one: 1= Cheeper

Should be able to pick one of those up for about £40!

I'm tempted to have a stab at something (though that might just be wishful thinking). Got a model I'd like to do but it's a well known character so kind of kills any creativity as far as fluff writing goes. :?
