Oldhammer Weekend Painting Competition

I think if we are having a sword we should present the "player sword" rather than the slayer sword.
I think we should give it to the least competative, fluffiest, best humoured, most oldhammer attendee at the event. ... because that is where this all started. An idea to get back to a different kind of gaming.

I do think we should have a painting competition
I think the trophies for the painting competition should be really naff. (I was going to spray paint gold and slap on a plinth some plastic goblins last time ... but was defeated by time).
The other thing I thought to do was I painted up a Bryan Ansell mini to give to the winner. But I will be honest ... when I saw the standard of Nico's painting I felt too embarrassed to hand it over.
I like the idea of a sword but think we should knock something up out of cardboard, scrap wood and held together with string.
This may deter trophey hunters who have no interest in the oldhammer movement from bothering to enter. But will not deter those of us who are interested in enjoying oldhammer.
We can also use different criteria for judging the minis ... rather than looking at the best painted minis if we give our awards for the most 'oldhammer minis' rather than being another painting competation where the best blended, NMM, greyed out formula mini wins the slightly more vibrant, with a nice oldhammer shield design and a bit of Leonado inspired freehand on the banner that most captures the oldhammer vibe is what we are looking to acknowledge.

Thanks very much.

My other thought is that in days gone by folks used to enter armies into the golden demon and that was what i always enjoyed most about the event. Looking at painted armies. There was always single minis but that was not the focus in the past. Could we have that as a category so rather than looking at the best painting we are looking at who can pull together the most unified, themed, contingent or army. Something with some nice conversions, some clever use of plastic toys a bit of scratch building ... I am thinking of Thansants Tortoise and Padres plastic gorillas as I write this.

Zhu has had a great idea. The sword should in fact be an old hammer. Painted a suitably naff golden colour! I think the comp should be the opposite of all the others and should focus on madcap zaniness with an old school vibe. Then people won't be fazed by entering. Additionally, I think we should vote on the day for the prefered model rather than selecting a judge.

I think that sounds great and is the spirit of what I was driving at......don't make it all about technical excellence and don't make the prizes so attractive that it draws in entrants who don't subscribe to the ethos or spirit of Oldhammer. Player votes are always good and preferable to judges most of the time.

On the subject of voting for armies, that is a category that needn't be a formal category at all. Each player/attendee is just given a slip to vote for their favourite army/force over the weekend. Job done and they don't need to be all formally displayed, just viewed as they are being used on the table top where they belong! That way everybody who brings figures to play with enters the competition, without having to formally enter, if you take my drift. Those who want to enter the general painting competition could then enter their single models or whatever is agreed on.

Sorry Treps,

But this is just one small event within a whole bigger show, and at the request our hosts - it would appear poor form in my opinion, to turn it into something which wouldn't actually be there (a internet event) over the weekend. How do we to tell the casual visitor - that they need to go on to the internet to look at the entries to the painting competition - nah the figures/models have to be there to be judged in the flesh(we had entries last year sent by post and I'm sure people are willing to accommodate such things again, yes?
I do totally agree and yes the miniature has to be at the event (and I never wrote something else), but when I read that the attendee has to be there I understand that the entrant has to be there and that is the point I'm contesting, miniatures can be sent to someone that will be present if the entrant can not make the trip to the event !
I'm not speaking of an internet based contest...

As for your final statement that "Oldhammer has to be a world wide Movement to exist" - heavy stuff, but I see it more as an idea - which needs no body, to exist bar the one who had it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CgSRI2K4k0. But this is not a subject to discuss here, on a message board discussing a painting competition, if, you feel you want to take this further - please PM me & I'll happily debate the subject to the ends of my limited ability.
Ideas need people to exist otherwise they die, but I do agree that is may not be the best place to discuss this ;)

An Old hammer would be perfect.

Have you considered this possibility? If YOU find the hammer and paint it gold, it would be 'Harry's Hammer'!

I can think of no other worthy prize than Harry's Hammer!

Isn't Fimm a propmaker by trade? He could make a nice hammer too, but the idea of one of Harrys spares globbed over with Shining Gold is very amusing - although the figure of the 1st Edition cover was called Uthmog, no idea when the Harry the Hammer moniker started being used, I think it's much more recent.

On another tangent, what does this competition "do" to the Golden Gobbos, is it still going to run? Is the community going to be able to support 2 competitions. And in this day and age, wouldn't an internet / photography based competition make much, much more sense and be open to many more people? I got the general idea that people were against it being an internet based competition, but don't know why. Seems like the idea is a worthwhile one to me, don't http://www.coolminiornot.com/ run competitions for people?

Both types of competition could cohabit without problem, but it is true that a "real" competition during the Oldhammer Weekend could be a real good idea to communicate outside this forum, and miniatures seen in the flesh are not the same that miniatures seen on a screen...

To my mind there are just so many barriers to entry for it to be of interest to anyone off-forum - posting their precious old lead to an event they can't go to, to people they don't know, and paying for return postage and insurance. Yeah, I hear you on the tangible vs. virtual thing, but much wider exposure and participation on the virtual side. Perhaps an additional category for virtual would help? They could win a photo of Harrys Hammer
