MDF and cardboard buildings

Recently purchased several MDF buildings that have cardboard inserts for window frames, doors etc. Really happy with the buildings BUT I have concerns about painting them. Warping both the MDF and cardboard is a concern as is the amount of paint they MDF can potentially soak up. Also the small details are nice and I don't want to lose these either.

Anyone with experience/suggestions??

I tend to spray/airbrush a good, but thin, undercoat on anything card/mdf. it puts a limited amount of moisture on the surface whilst sealing it, and so it's less likely to warp.

I usually undercoat mdf buildings with slightly thinned gesso and I haven't had one warp so much as a millimetre yet.
