Old school basing, best practice?

I will soon begin painting my RT space marine army as well as some other bits and bobs. I was wondering what the prevailing opinion was regarding basing specifically texturing?

What do you think would give the best "authentic" effect? Painted Sand? Flock? Something else?

I'm erring towards sand painted "goblin green" as my childhood was on the cusp of 2nd edition bright and shiny 40k but all advice listened to!

Id go for a nice tasteful earth and rocks brown/grey with some tufts of static grass maybe.

This. It's the dominant look of the RT era. If you want hardcore obscure oldschool do hexbases:

Defo' brown base edges.

Hmm, I guess I was looking for people to confirm my existing bias towards goblin green land.......!

I might still go with it as it'll tie in with some of my 2nd ed orks.
