Filling gaps around shield bosses on Oldhammers shields

Has anyone got any tips for filling in the gaps around shield bosses on the old shields with holes right through? It's not a big issue where there is a long, domed shield boss, but where the boss/peg is short and flat I find it hard to disguise the hole and make the shield completely flat for painting. Thanks.

It's one of the reasons I don't use those shields!

One trick I have done before was to shave the metal boss down so it's behind the surface of the shield, then cut out a circle of very thin plasticard the same diameter as the main shield face inside the rim, then just replace the whole face of the shield. Also has the benefit that you can paint it before gluing it in. Only works with the circular ones though, the evil/chaos ones are a pain to make an inset for.

On the whole though, I tend to use newer, aftermarket shields (shock horror!) ;)

I like milliput for this. A wet, flat silicone clay shaper makes short work of smoothing it in, and small amounts like that cure enough to paint in around an hour.
