I cleaned the last 10 models for the unit, glued them to their bases and glued sand around their feet.

One model's axe I cut away, and drilled a hole for a piece of brass rod. This one will be the banner bearer for the smaller detachment.

I then basecoated them with 74.602 Black Surface Primer through my airbrush.

Looking good matemate!
This is gonna be a beautiful little army force. Any thoughts on a hero to lead them?

I actually thought of this, but I always think that just bloodying the weapons looks... odd. I mean, if the weapons show traces of recent slaughter, the rest of the models should as well. Why would the person be clean while his weapon is blood spattered? But also 'wheathering' all the miniatures is quite time consuming... and painting this unit already takes long enough...

I would vote against blood splattered as well. As you say takes so long, also difficult to do realistically and if you do it realistically makes them pretty gruesome.

I started to look into the banners I will have the two banner bearers carrying. After some Google search for Viking banners, I quickly found Odin's Raven as a symbol I liked quite well. Using the image from the Wikipedia page as a basis, I came up with the two following designs:

The larger one will be for the main unit, the smaller one for the detachment.

Colourwise I am not quite sure yet. I think the inner colour will be white, what is now black I envisage in a deep red... but this remains to be seen.

Very nice painting. How big are these vikings? I always assumed they were really big but they look okay.

I finished the last ten models:

As mentioned in earlier posts, I saved all the horned models' horns to be painted in one group. I placed stripes of lighter colours above each other towards the tips, leaving the last colour to show through the bottom part of the next.

  2. 70.822 German Camo Black Brown

Next up is grass for the bases and the two flags, then the unit(s) will be done.

I printed the banners, then partly cut them from the paper before painting them. I had several issues why I didn't first paint them (as I usually do) before doing all the cutting. One were the fringes, which needed to line up, the second was the way the larger banner pole is being held by the miniature - I was not able to wrap the banner around from the front.

For the fringes, it was relatively easy with the larger ones; the ones on the small banner I cheated with: I painted one half completely red, then only cut them from the other side in one go after the two halves where glued together.

For the larger flag, I folded the two sides of the banner not over the middle (as with the smaller one), but around the tips - first time I did that.

After the glue dried, I bent the banners into shape and added some very thinned brown wash into the folds.
