Battlefleet Gothic

I know Battlefleet Gothic may not be Oldhammer, but it definitely is not Newhammer, so maybe some kind of Middlehammer?

Anyway, I wanted to share my new ongoing crazy project , an Ork Fleet.

Some time ago I got this:

2u8feck.jpg

Everyone out there is painting their Ork ships just in black with a little red here and there. I definitely didn't want that. For many years I've seen in my mind the perfect reference for Ork ships, I mean Reavers from Firefly :geek: (I mean it, what's not to love about them? Junk ships, wild paintings, smoke all around... perfect Ork ships!)

As my Imperial Fleet is already painted in grey, I went for a white/creamy base colour:

After a couple of washes (earth brown and darker brown), they begun to look like this:

oqdfet.jpg

Then I painted black all those areas that later on are going to be metal:

This is it so far, 33 ships on their way :? . You can find some more details on the blog:

Moar wurk comin' zoon!!

Re: [BFG] Ork Fleet

Well , I have to say that I really dislike Dave Andrew's work on many many ranges (especially those atrocious Eldars, gooosh what was he thinking?) and I've always thought they paint like sh**. That said, this is probably the first time that I find apaintstyle that matches one of these models and make it actually really cool. Now we're getting the old and rusty salvaged junk space ship feeling... I don't know if all the models he made can be saved with an appropriate PJ but you definitely made these look great. With the black parts they look real menacing, great great job !

Re: [BFG] Ork Fleet

That's a lot of minis to tackle at once you brave man. :)

I quite like the black & tan colours. I am not 100% sure that painting them metal is the best way to go with it. Perhaps just do 1 of the smaller ships and then see what that looks like before you commit. I think black, tan and small amounts of white as a spot colour might be nice.

I agree with Sean - I like the black and tan scheme. If you're sold with metallics, it might be worth keeping them very dark and oily to maintain the contrast.

Thanks pals! Appreciated!
Hmm, I'm not sure about leaving these pieces black; there are some details that are to be lost in the darkness, and I'm also planning to use some black for stripes and paintings. Hmmm. I'll make some experiments with both and let you know.

Good idea.

Looking forward to seeing how you progress these Suber. :)

Re: [BFG] Ork Fleet

I spent some time thinking about the black or metal issue. Having an end state image in my mind, I finally risked it all to metals. Let me explain: There were some details on the pieces that would be lost (unless I used extreme highlights), and I was planning some stripes and stuff using black. So I finally dared to paint them in metallic appearance:

OK, still a WIP. Then I went on the 'decorations'. Nothing but crude stripes, red or black:

Well, you get the idea:

You have them all here:

Still unfinished, I have to add some little checkers, lights over the hull, that kind of stuff, the tiny details to make them look good ;)

You made the right choices in my opinion, they work great with the metal gubbinz and the black stripes. I never much fancied the Ork space fleet, but this makes the ships look good.

Here's da fleet!

The White Dragons fleet is the informal denomination for the XF-O4-9753 Ork Fleet operating in the Eastern Fringe. Though every ship has an official denomination, it's customary to informally rename them by Imperial Fleet members (just translating its original name if it is known or providing new denominations ad hoc). Here you can see the following:

The Ravenous. Terrorship class

The Ardent Jaws. Terrorship class

The Dragonback. Killkroozer class

The Blackmaw. Killkroozer class

The Brute, Bighorn, Ibex and Chamois. Brute Ram Ship class

The Carnotaurus, Fierce Scales and Bloody Jaws. Ravager Attack Ship class

The Darkjaws, Killakilla, Swiftdealer and Dragonet. Onslaught Attack Ship class

Well, and a few more. Here you can see the whole fleet deployed:

I'll be needing a break of tiny ships :?, but I'll use the hiatus to think if I'm going on repainting/augmenting (well, both ;) ) my Imperial Fleet or my Chaos Fleet...

Lovely result, really dig the choice of colors. And the fact that you took the time to differentiate your ships.

What he said, on top of that I just realised what a pain in the butt this must have been to trace staright lines over such textures

Thank you all! I had to take some risks here, I've found these models to be quite a challenge. Glad you like them!

Re: [BFG] Ork Fleet

They look really great. You managed to get the balance good with the colours. The individuality of the ships really works well to give the fleet character.

Instead of starting a new thread, I think it would be easier keeping track of everything over here. Moving stuff from here to there I just found my ooold Imperial Fleet. I'm planning to strip and repaint everything you are about to see, but well, I just wanted to take the chance of showing the ships.

First of all, the Orion, Emperor class Battleship:

Dictator class Cruiser Athena and Mars class Battle Cruiser Perseus:

Lunar class Cruisers Master of Cosmos and Atlantis:

You can clearly see I must work on the brushpaint (and some names!)

I also made this star fortress using little garbage and bits (scratch sounds too classy for what I did here ). Space station Penthesilea:

Of course what this fleet desperately lacks is escort ships. I bought these to a friend, but haven't painted any of them yet!

So now I have the chance to paint everything here in an unified scheme. :? I don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon, but at least now I have the minis located and reachable!

You can find them at the blog:
