The City of Altheim (Blacksmiths P4)

So, I've decided to make my Warhammer Fantasy city of Altheim my main project for 2020, and thought I'd document it's progress here.

The original plan was just to recreate the old cardboard Warhammer Townscape buildings as more realistic iterations of themselves, one of which can be seen here:

However, the project has expanded and morphed into a plan to recreate an entire portion of a walled city on an 8'x4' table for the aforementioned buildings to sit on, as well as an entire range of townsfolk that live there. The eventual plan is to potentially use it for a participation game at an event at some point in the future, but we'll see about that when it's finished.

The plan for the city is as follows:

And, as you can see, I've currently got as far as building the walls and positioning them on the board:

And here's the walls in a bit more detail:

The walls themselves are from the sadly now out of production modular castle from Tabletop Workshop, I was lucky enough to pick a load up when they first came out, years ago.

Next up will be the roads, which I'll be making using individual cobblestones...

Stunning stuff. This is the sort of thing a lot of us dream about. Hope the project goes well.

Did you say individual cobblestones?

Looks great. The wall down the side is a bit redundant though other than an edge blocker. Is there any mileage in slightly shrinking the width inside the walls and show some sprawl outside. It would also give two different environments (and potentially mean slightly fewer buildings to construct)

Yup! I've decided on the pattern at the top of this pic:

I prefer the one at the bottom really, but realistically, the upper one uses less stones, so it's fewer to cast up and less work to lay them all!

My eventual plan is to create a board that will butt up to the side wall, thus allowing for siege games, and that might include some buildings outside the wall at some point. Tbh the main reason for the long side wall is to curtail the play area in a realistic manner, and allow me to make a bunch of buildings that fit up against the wall, which is a design element I just love.

Are you going to take a mould of a section of paving and cast that up? Would much quicker than individual stones...

It would be quicker and easier, but I'm never one for going the quick and easy route!

Absolutely insane and inspiring . Love the details you've added to an already lovely castle especially the repaired wall. Going to look forward to seeing how you progress

Bloody hell, look at the size of that thing! Judging by the Necromancers tower and the Port Imperiale and JMC projects this is going to be amazing.

A small(ish) update this time, as I've finished a building and it's inhabitant, Leopold Kochenheim and his Rare Book Emporium:

What a perfect inclusion for a WFRP city! I imagine the volumes of obscure occult lore that are tucked away amongst his shelves ready for a nefarious stranger to try and pilfer.

Envy is a deadly sin... So I must be in big trouble! ;)

The quality of your work on that townhouse makes me wonder what your fortification will look like.
Keep up the good work and motivation, we need to see more!

I've got another building done, this time the Watch House, along with the Watch themselves to go in it...

This just gets better and better, so many little details that really make this stand out. The addition of the watch really adds to the building they look a right ragtag bunch of misfits !
