I like it! Great way tonot cut up an old mini

Also a sneaky way to bulk up the regiment a bit.

Painting is by and large done at this point. I may go back and do some more highlights, but for now, it's looking decent. The only thing left to do now are the shields and I'll tackle them in a bit. But for a break, I'm doing the basing. Current progress shown.

I'm also looking to do a few more models later on; I'm waiting on the handgunners until I make another big order of Mirliton to grab a front rank of their metals. But I'm also working on a proper standard for the army. Looking over the blogs everyone here has, one thing definitely stood out that my army is lacking, an army standard. And let's face it; it's not truly Oldhammer until you have a far too large handpainted banner of some kind, preferably visible from orbit, or at least the next county. I won't be going that large, but it's something I'd like to add later on. I like the way the Grenadier metal looks, but trying to paint something decent on that will be more fuss than it's worth. So another spear dwarf will be my army standard bearer. Brass rod has been ordered and I'm waiting on a tube of puree to be finished.

For the standard, I wanted to get away from the usual dwarf iconography; runes, axes, hammers, etc. I also wanted something simple to deal with my lack of experience in freehand painting stuff! So a simple design works best. Here's what I might use for the army; to signify the King Under the Mountain of the non-descript hold these lads live in my little corner of the Old World and how his crown is above even that mighty peak. Or something like that.

Your banner looks great!

I'd wait until I have it painted up before praising. It may look good in concept, but will I be able to pull off the execution? Time will tell!

Regardless, I've got the standard bearer ready to go; just a simple plastic spear dwarf with the spear trimmed away, the hand drilled out and mounted on a single base. Not sure I'll keep the brass rod quite that high; it all depends on how I can do the banner.

I had hoped to get the shields done this weekend, but I wasn't happy with how they turned out, so a bath in meths later and they were clean and good to go. Then this heatwave hit and I'm not priming anything in this humidity. So other projects were worked on, sun was enjoyed and I also got the banner cut out for my army standard.

Still waiting on some more rod to make the cross pole but it's looking pretty good as is already. All thanks to Orlygg and his banner tutorial for not only inpsiring this but also showing me how it's done. Hopefully my poor painting skills won't mangle up your instructions too much.

I also dug out a left over metal Lund Grendier/Mirliton dwarf I had to help fill the gaps in the ranks with the banner in place in a regiment. I might have him as a champion or hero, but still considering. For now, he just stands next to the banner, on guard.

Re: Dirty Dwarves Done Cheap

Been a bit busy as of late, but managed to get some work done.

It took me a few tries with the shields before I got to the stage when I was happy with them; third time was the charm it seems. Or perhaps I just got tired of painting 40 odd shields!

I tried masking the first time, with poor results (curved shields are not fun for this it seems). Then my second attempt I used freehand but wasn't happy with the results. Third time and they're looking good enough to me.

I also did some touch ups and clean up on the spear dwarves; still going to do a bit more of the metal when I clean up the final regiment; the crossbow dwarves. I'm going to do a bit more work on the back of the shields for these as they're a lot more visible than on these spear dwarves.

Got the putty and basing material on this lot though and things are starting to look half decent now! Just need to finish off the crossbows, paint up the standard and the escort and then finish the basing.

Brutal! That really looks impressive once lined up like that!

It's really starting to get there, isn't it?

'Finished' off the crossbow unit today. I might go back and touch up the metal in a bit, but it's fine for now.

I used the shields I wasn't quite happy with for the backs, tidied up a bit. Makes more sense to have them where they'll be out of sight for the most part.

And now I just need to paint up those two in the centre and get the bases painted up. There's a few things extra I want to add, but I've pushed them onto the backburner for now (the thunderers, for example).

Home stretch now, it seems.

Well, it's been a fair few months and honestly not a lot has been done but back into things now.

I've been experimenting with gesso and loving it so far; the last two minis (for now) are being primed.

I can't find the banner i made at the moment, but I'm sure it'll show up.

That's going to be a great looking army - I love your standard!
Thanks; unfortunately things haven't really moved on from my last post! I have begun to use some free time this week and am resolved to have done sooner rather than later.

To that end, I've finished painting these two up; the banner may need some stripping as the primer wasn't quite set when I began to paint on the basecoat, but that should be fairly easy with this stuff.

You can also see that it didn't stick too well to the pole once slotted into place. I think I'm going to keep it there and paint it in situ.

They look nice in paint. Good and beardy. Sorry the banner is such a pain, but if you can paint it on the miniature, go for it.

With one last spurt of activity, I think we're pretty much there.

As always, there's still a few more things to do. A few details I've forgotten and a few shields left to paint. I also will redo the banner later as it's not really as good as I wanted it to be, but it'll do for now. And of course there'll be things to add later on as the collection grows.

But otherwise, here it is.

Well done! If you can't make the banner come to the mountain, take the mountain to the banner. Very fine army and a lovely banner indeed!

Looking great. The monopose suits dwarfs I think, makes them look more regimented and controlled, menacing in a very controlled way.
