Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

I get all twitchy when it comes to cutting up precious old led :D but duly noted! How did you do it? Cut the legs off or from under the belt?

I'm not a fan of his pose as a 'grunt' (unless he is diving away from an explosion or shot in the leg) but his character is just perfect for the helmet-less squad. That said, I've just looked through every box, bits and bag I have to see if I have anything to replace him with and keep the squad all helmet-less, talk about luck, I've got a standing marine with pistol. Sure its not a bolter but the pose is better and it fits.

I've pulled him off his base and he can ride a rhino with the other rider.

Thank you for the advice, suggestion! :D

Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

Yeah, I just cut one of his legs off and used an old RBT01 thigh leg section to repose it. I've got pics on my blog about it if your interested to see what he turned out like.

That other guy you found is another Rhino rider! What luck hey :)

I wouldn't worry too much about cutting them up, they're not exactly rare minis, and they look great reposed sometimes.

Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

Ok, so, just a little tidy up and scalpel scrape needed when all dry, then ready for paint. Now I've got to admit, this wasn't as fun as I thought it was going to be. The old bits don't lend them selves well to dynamic posing and I don't have the skills to sculpt pieces so I have to bastardise bits. I found the old plastic on this batch was bad before I used the stripper on it and worse after. But, I feel they turned out ok though. Not the best, but then from table top distance they should hold their own, with classic proportions and not too many dodgy looking bits. They clearly look like the beakies but with a simple updated. I'm pleased with the Sarg/mask head and the special weapons man for their poses. The special weapons dude as you can see has some magnetised weapon options. So Tactical squad of 5 and the kneeling down fella, he will be the Techmarine gunner for the thud gun.

I swear, each time I work on some beakies, the quality of them/plastic gets worse and worse and makes it harder and harder. Oh for the fresh out the box stuff. Still. Some old plastic saved with scalpel surgery, putty and a few improvised new bits to cover up the un-fixable.

Now to undo all that work with some painting! :D

Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

Painting well underway and looking ok. I've also redone ALL the Forces bases to match all the tones. I think they look good, the more vibrant colours make the blue armour stand out and the models pop.

I've also got really frustrated at battling the ever changing consistency of the paint as it dries on the pallet. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about if I talk about eyes and lenses. Your painting them up, got the right amount of paint on your brush and its going on nice, 3 paint dabs later and the paint has dried and thickend some and does not paint/flow in the same predicable way causing problems. SO, i'm trying out the wet pallet. Home made of course for a sandwhich box lid and a folded of sheet of Blitz kitchen roll and yeh, yeh I think I like it. The paint takes on a whole new characteristic which I am having to learn but, as a whole, I do like it! I'm sure one day I could even use it to get proper technical instead of just keeping paint predictable and not drying.

Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

Almost there, I've got a bit frustrated, bored of these now in such a number. The base colouring I can do quick but its all the details and weathering which take an age and each time I pic up one to do a little more, I see little mistakes that need correcting or missed bits. So, for now, they are table top ready and done, with the caveat of needing the usual transfers, touch ups and mat varnish.

Sternguard Squad - They look the part, I'm happy with these.

Tactical Squad - Reposed plastic beakies, some pose better than others but on the whole I'm pleased with this little experiment.

Tank Riders - I'll use these chaps to sit on Rhinos as makers for carrying troops.

Tactical Squad - No helmets. The flamer back pack looks ok and saved me the lack of a true marine one.

Tactical Squad - With helmets. The Imperial Space marine is not finished, I didn't want to just batch paint him so I will give that model some time and patience in due course.

Tech marine gunner - For thud gun, I feel a bit, meh. The pose don't look quite right and his little hand console looks kit bashed rather than LIKE something. But it will do for now.

Comms - (not sure what / how to play with chap) I think the back pack goes with this model perfect.

That's all for now folks.
Not sure why but the camera/lighting seems to not pick up the blending well and gives an overall warmth to the colours? I have white balanced it. AND it picks out all the worse bits with clarity :D

Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

Such an enjoyable project to follow. Paint and conversions lovely. Basing scheme sets them off perfectly. Would be proud to own.

Aside the models your commentary deserves special mention. Not too much, not too little. Full of interesting bits about your thought processes, constraints, techniques, trials and tribulations. I feel much like I have been riding on your shoulder for the duration and I appreciate the work done so much more for it.

Also a special mention for putting a sizeable force together in six months with steady progress updates. Hope to see more in due course, marines or otherwise.

Well done. Thanks for sharing.

This project continues to shape up excellently.

The results - and your remarkable pace in achieving them - are to be envied.

Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

As always, thank you for your comments. :D

Had enough of batch painting for now so I thought I would have a go and doing my bestests best on a single mini. I've learnt a few things from you lot over the time I've been here so I thought I'd pick a colour that I can't hide mistakes with and go for broke. (That and I'm a tad bored of blue at the mo)

So here he is, the Inquisitor. Seems only right that the Crimson Fists returned from being lost in the warp be scrutinised by the Inquistion.

That's mah best. Can't paint better than that. But I'm pleased with him and happy with my progress over the last 6 months. Only trouble is... when I look at the army I see the difference in my skill and progression... Hmm... Wonder if I've got any paint stripper left. They look a bit rag tag over the shelf but its getting there.

Re: Crimson Fists - Rogue Trader

All looking great (except the fallen obviously)

Just one suggestion. Why not put the comms guy on the Thudd gun. It looks like he is controlling something with some kind of computer. You can then disassemble the pose you are not happy with and use him for something else. I think the problem is that right arm with the pistol. That arm never looked any good to me, sort of a weird scrunched up look to it. I think it looks better more upright. So it is not firing but sort of being bought down to bear on a target.

Looking great, and I like the bone and purple combo on the Inquisitor.
