Old Computer Games

I was rummaging around in some of the cupboards I probably should have sorted and cleared out over the summer and found an old computer of mine. I nearly earmarked it for the tip/recycling until I remembered it was my only way of playing some of the older Dos games I've harboured over the years.

Without it wouldn't be able (unless there's some clever way round it) to play Final Liberation - great stuff

or Chaos Gate (never really got on with this one)

I have even fonder memories of hours wasted in two player mode on Barbarian on a mate's amiga

Even more hours zapping baddies in Gauntlet on another mate's C64

and when he upgraded to a Megadrive, Golden Axe became our favourite game

Seem to remember owning the Heroquest computer game too - but must have played the boardgame more though ;)

So how did you lot waste your youth away - other than playing with little lead men?

Late 80s and early 90s classic games eh? There are so, so many. I started with the legendary C64 before upgrading to an Amiga 500+ in about 1990/91.

I never got on with Final Liberation and much preferred Chaos Gate. I loved the opening scene for Chaos gate... Barbarian and its sequel were real favourites too.

Classics games for me would have to be (in no particular order)

Fantasy World Dizzy (c64)

Thing on a Spring (c64)

Metabolis (c64)

Moonstone (Amiga)

Secret of Monkey Island (Amiga)

Oh boy, don't get me started. Computer gaming and general computer geekery was my primary hobby for the duration of my youth.

It all started with a mate's old Philips G7000 (aka Magnavox 2)

Space Invaders was my favourite game, but we also played a Pac Man clone quite a lot, and some sort of 2 player cowboy shootout as well as a baloon fighting game also for two players.

My first machine of my own was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K. I transferred program listings from the pages in Sinclair User, and played fantastic games such as Pyjamarama, Jet Set Willy, Manic Miner, Bzzzt, Atic Atac, Head over heels and much, much more. This was also the platform where I got into fantasy gaming. =) Text adventures such as Twin Kingdom Valley and The Hobbit really helped improving my grades in English in school. =D

I also started my rather fruitless programming on this. I did solo adventure games based on the Lone Wolf books (which I got into about the same time, around age 9-10 or so, when they were released in Swedish).

Was also my first contact with GW stuff, as I played a very confusing Talisman license on the Speccy.

After that, it was on to a C128 where my favourite games were many. A special shout-out to Alternate Reality: The Dungeon though. I bought it in a shop in Malmö, Sweden where they also sold various role playing games and miniatures. I brought an Essex miniatures catalogue with me home and day dreamed about buying everything in it. Not much have changed, eh? =)

From there on it was Amigas of various configurations, before taking the leap to the dark side and buying a PC to play Doom, X-Wing and Alone in the Dark in the 90s. =)

I have always had a soft spot for fantasy games though. I remember the Archon series fondly on the C64, and spent WAY too much time with Ultima Underworld and Daggerfall on my PC. Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master got a lot of play time on the Amiga, and when I got back into retro gaming at the university I had a lot of fun with the Bard's Tale series.

I think I'll do a series of blog posts on this topic, actually. Thanks for the inspiration, Steve! =D

For me there is only one true old hammer game and it isn't even fantasy. I've recently played a few games, taken screen shots and have been planning a post.

The name of the game?

Lazer squad!

Some great titles there and some I haven't come across.

I was born and raised on the C64 - loved that comp even if it was my brothers! Other games we played copious amounts of were Armalyte, Silk Worm, Skool Daze and there was a Judge Dredd game we had that was pretty terrible apart from the free Space Invaders game you got to play while it was loading!

Before that we had a BBC Micro and played Commando for hours on end - much to the disapproval of my Dad who I think had intended us to be learning basic and learning stuff...

Thought this might strike a chord with some of you lot!

Next thing is where do I go for a decent emulator to get some of these classics on my PC so I can spend even more time procrastinating and not painting.

Talk about a blast from the past. I played both Final Liberation and Chaos Gate through to completion a few times but I had totally forgotten about Lazer Squad. I do not know how many hours I spent on that game. Aah the memories....

Great thing about old computer games is you could paint about 10 figures whilst waiting for the tape to load!

Was barbarian the game where you could turn the blood and gore off? Great fun!

More fun with it on - loved that little goblin that came on to drag your opponent's head off!

Yep - but the worst thing was when the sound of the tape deck clicking to a stop because the tape had played through, but the game had failed to load!

I remember this. Never owned it but I certainly remember it being advertised in Games Machine... and wasting plenty of time ogling the busty barbarian lass. That stuff is porn when you're 11 (and live in a time before everyone had the internet!).

Anyway, I did play a fair bit of this on the old Amstrad:

And this, until it would crash at the same point every time:

I probably played this more though on my friend's Amiga:

One summer holiday spent playing through all 100 levels in two player only to fail that final boss.

Someone's been working on a remake of Alternate Reality here: http://www.crpgdev.com/

It's been progressing pretty well; probably the most interesting part is that The City and The Dungeon are incorporated into a single game, as was originally intended.
