2520 - 2521 The Bretonnian Wars

After completing extensive campaign of Tamurkhan, I am embarking, with my usual Rathelot club gaming partners, on a new big project: The Bretonnian Wars of 2520 (the Year of Woe) and 2521 (the Mallobaude Revolt) .

***

The End Time is approaching, the Chaos portals are still spewing more magical energy on the Known world. As the first step in this still-coming storm, Tzeentch, the Lord of Change, sends his devoted servant Kairos to devastate Bretonnia.
Why Tzeentch and why Bretonnie? Perhaps this calculating god wants to prevent the Empire from benefiting from a certain strategic depth or a tank of soldiers for the future war? Perhaps he sees how much the Lady's servants could be useful to the elves? Perhaps he wants to simplify the task to the usurper Mallobaude and rejoice in the chaos: change is now!
The demonic armies of Tzeentch are striking everywhere in the kingdom. Bretonnians will never really understand the logic of these attacks that seem to target almost random objectives: rich villages, old baronies, oratories dedicated to the Lady, royal symbols, etc. Kairos actually seeks to capture the most powerful magical items in Bretonnia, especially those that belonged to the companions of Gilles, the country's legendary founder.

Battle I-1 : The barony of Bonnecuite
Kairos sends the Lord of Change Rofocal to attack the barony of Bonnecuite in Lyonesse in order to capture a magic lance. After having burned a few farms to make sure everyone was well aware of his presence, the demon chose to attack a small cemetery in the town. The latter houses the remains of Saint Frusquin, distant descendant of Thierulf of Lyonnesse, which is the subject of a local cult. The goal of the demon is to involve the Baron Bonnecuite himself equipped with all the weapons of his ancestors including the magic lance he seeks. His plan works.
The battle report
After having dispersed the Bretonian men-at-arms, the Lord of Change joined the cemetery held by the Pink Horrors. The charge of the knights and the baron himself, who was trying to dislodge them, is as heroic as he is hopeless.

Battle I-2 : The beat of lord de Manchabal
The beastmen of Zambar Bone (see battles IV-5, V-2 and VI-2 of the Tamurkhan campaign) have joined the southern Carcassone ! Tzeentch marked the shaman of the band and they were joined by a Champion of the God of Change.
After attacking some Bretonnian farms, the beastmen are confronted by the troop of Marquis Hilarion de Manchabal. He is an archetype of Carcassonian. He lives only to fight all the creatures coming down from the Irrana mountains. He is a brave warrior and he is accompanied by many knights in search of the Grail or glory.

The servants of Tzeentch suffer a defeat. They must retreat as the demons gradually disappear from the battlefield. The protection of the Lady has served the Bretonnians enormously and she has saved the knights more than once from the blows of the opposing monsters.

The campaign in Bretonnie is progressing ! Phase I, the Year of Woe (a Tzeentch's incursion of in the kingdom) is almost over. Despite beautiful victories and some major magic items captured, Kairos forces have failed to take a total upward on the Bretonnians especially since the intervention of Nurgle.

Batlle I-3 : The duke Chilbroy d'Artois
Duke Chilbroy d'Artenois is a morose person who likes nothing so much as hunting in the forest. It is precisely during a halt in a forest hamlet that demons of Tzeentch fall on him. The duke and his entourage receive the unexpected help of Bertrand le Brigand and the archers of Bergerac - which these are far from being friends ... The imminence of the danger makes them make common front.
Battle Report
After a long duel with Deamon Prince Ssss'lip, Chilbroy is seriously injured. The rest is scattered under the blows of the minor demons and an imposing Chimera. Tzeentch has nothing to do with the destiny of the little duke: he does not even bother to finish it and simply steals his magical spear. The damsel of the Grail is possessed by a demon of Tzeentch. The battle is not, however, a rout for the Bretonnians: the knights of the Quest behave in a very remarkable way and Bertrand gathers the surviving commoners to hold the village.
rdb25_3_12.jpg

Batlle I-4 : Disorder in Quenelles
The fief of the rich Baron Régnier de Panteleon is attacked! Tzeentch's demons seized a watchtower at one end of his stronghold. Listening only to his courage, the baron gathers his bannerets, has his griffon saddled, and runs to the enemy. The object of the raid is the Icon of Quenelles. The latter had indeed been lent by the cathedral of Quenelles to honor a marriage in the family of this baron among the most powerful duchy.
See Battle Report
The Bretonnians were seriously struggling on the battle. A Tzeentch henchman had certainly poisoned the peck of their horses because, with the exception of the Knights of the Grail, all their cavalry was unable to charge (5 charges missed in total!). And a Breton who does not charge is a Breton beaten ... The defense was indeed stinging. The baron is dead and the Icon of Quenelles icon has been stolen!

rdb25_4_10.jpg

Batlles I-5a et I-5b : Return of the Camaros !
The Camaros (well known since the Tamurkhan campaign) could not do without hintering projects Tzeentch. After having lived a few years in the Border Princes, they go to Bretonnia via the Vault. That said, we do not enter Bretonnia without risk. During a passage in the undergrowth, they are intercepted by a forest elf troops of Athel Loren.
See the battle report: Woodwalk of Clitys
No doubt prevented by the flies that accompany them in abundance, the Camaros manage to surprise those who were supposed to ambush them. The elves are severely beaten and their witch captured by the giant! Following the battle, Nurgle honors the wizard Piféar with a look.
The Camaros find Radiopiou. Both sides summon minor demons to help them and that's the clash!
See battle report: 10-year-old enemies
What a massacre! If Nurgle wins in the end, two iconic heroes, Radiopiou and Y-Harg, find horrible deaths. This band of Tzeentch particularly active in Bretonnia is almost exterminated. This is a blow to the projects of the deamon Kairos.
rdb25_5b_7.jpg

Battle I-6 : Who want kill Jasperre le Beau ?
Kairos gives the last survivors of the Radiopiou band a chance to return to grace. It's about murdering Jasperre le Beau, the famous monster killer knight. This personality represents the spirit of Bretonnian resistance and his death could have serious consequences on the morale of the kingdom. The disciples of Tzeentch attack the knight's camp at night.
See Battle Report
Charles Ray, the last Tzeentch champion of the band Radiopiou, failed miserably in his mission. Jasperre, protected by a powerful magic object, is only superficially wounded in the attack. The beast beast of the champion will quickly stuffed to adorn the already well-filled walls of the castle of this knight.

Two battles played at the club allow to conclude phase 1 of the campaign:

The same Tzeentchians, defeated but reinforced by beastmen, retreat into the Massif Orcal where they meet ... orcs. They beat them without difficulty.

All these reports of battles are to read here:

Conclusion of the first phase: quasi-equality
After a good start where Tzeentch almost took the strategic ascendancy. However, the demonic war of Kairos in Bretonnia got bogged down. The interventions of the disciples of Nurgle and the elves gave a stop to the expansion of the invasion. The kingdom of Bretonnia, however, remains paralyzed by localized demonic incursions, but its state is not as desperate as the historical result.

As magic items, the demon Kairos has captured the banner of the Fleur de Lys, the Quenelles Icon, the Spear of Artois and the Spear of the Sacred Oak. This is not enough to break the morale of Bretonnians. However, these objects may have a role to play in the future revolt of Mallobaude.

Finally, Kairos gathers an army in front of Moussillon ...

The second phase starts slowly. It is the revolt of Mallobaude.

Here are two of the Dramatis personae: Mallobaude the Serpent himself (on the right) and his affine Baron Aucassin (on the left)

At the beginning of the 1540s of the Bretonnian Calendar (around 2518 of the Imperial Calendar), the wind of the revolt suffered in Moussillon. The Black Knight known as Mallobaude, had gradually assembled a cohort of supporters - brigands and nobles - to form a real army. Mallobaude once had a vision of the Lady who changed her life. As a knight of the Quest, piously seeking for the road leading to the Lady of the Lake, he became the fiercest of his adversaries, determined to exterminate the worship of the Lady.
Roy Louen was closely watching the situation in Moussillon. The demonic incursion delays the plans of the rebel and muddy the cards. Especially when the demons of Kairos attacked Moussillon directly.

Battle II-1: The Battle of Moussillon
Kairos finally arrived in front of Moussillon. Still in his quest for magical objects, he seeks to capture the Chalice of Malfleur and sieges the city. Confident in the capabilities his new army, Mallobaude, tries an exit to clear the city. What is his surprise when he discovers that the demons of Tzeentch have been joined by demons of Nurgle and that they seem to fight each other!
Indeed, Nurgle also considers Moussillon as his city and he sends Ku'gath to thwart Kairos' plans ...
Two of Nurgle's favorites: Epidemius and Ku'gath!
rdb25_8_07.jpg

Battle Report
Despite his defeat in duel, Mallobaude is doing well. Forgetting the rout of his army, in the eyes of many Bretonnians, it is he who won the battle against the demons and not Roy Louen! Nurgle simply made sure that Tzeentch would stop playing in Bretonnia and all the demons disappear quickly. In front of his city, Mallobaude recovers the booty of Kairos (namely the magic objects that this one had stolen in the other duchies). It's gone for the revolt with the cry of "Mallobaude Roy"!

Battle II-2: A Snake at Bordeleau
At the end of the year 2521 CI, Mallobaude unveils his army of brigands and knights felons and he launches to the conquest of the country. It attacks primarily the weakest duchies, hoping to submit their dukes to his cause or replace them with men. His first target is Bordeleau. His Duke Alberic is aging but these knights are reputed to be the best of Bretonnia. In case of victory, it would be a clear warning to all those who would resist Mallobaude!
Battle Report
Mallobaude starts badly his rebellion! He made the mistake that any Bretonnian could be led to make: rely only on his chivalry and personal bravery. Opposite, we did not miss knights either (almost double) and still superior! The height of ridicule, the black knight flees pitifully his duel against the Duke of Bordeleau. But even if he lost the battle, the Serpent is doing well. He will come back and he will have learned a lot!

Battle II-3: Sus à l'Artois
Scalded by his previous defeat, the Serpent delegates his command to his lieutenant, Baron Aucassin. The latter attacks the duchy of Artois, already devastated last year by the demons of Tzeentch. He faces Duke Chilbroy himself.
Battle Report
After very hard fighting, the rebels win the battle. Aucassin killed Chilbroy who is replaced by a Mallobaude's puppet. The Artois joins the rebellion!

To follow, the Battle of Châlon!

Here some news of Bretonnia.

Battle II-4: Battle of Chalon
Ignoring the decree of Louen Lionheart calling all armies of Bretonnia to join forces to fight the threat of the Moussillon, Duke Armand d'Aquitaine leaves alone to face Mallobaude. He enjoys the favors of Morgiana the Enchantress Fairy.
Armand meets the forces of Mallobaude in the duchy of Bastogne: the two armies had already advanced well towards each other and the affrontation takes place near the Forest of Chalons.
http://verrahrubicon.free.fr/rdb25_11.html
Duke Armand has thwarted all predictions! He has lived up to his reputation by defeating Mallobaude and his knights (greatly helped, it is true, by Morginia spells). On the other hand, Mallobaude is still alive and exploits at best the confusion related to the disappearance of the Fairy removed by Drycha. Hired peddlers spread fake news: "Moussillon won the Battle of Chalon"! And some believe it: Lyonnesse and Carcassone join the rebellion!

Morgiana's kidnapping

rdb25_11_17.jpg

Battle II-5: Roy Louen goes to war
After the betrayal of three duchies and the disappearance of the Morgiana Fairy, King Louen had to react: he gathered his army which melted on the Artois, the rebellious duchy nearest to Crown, now run by Moriva the Vagabond, an ally of Mallobaude.
http://verrahrubicon.free.fr/rdb25_12.html
Crushing victory for the rebels! King Louen no doubt presumed his strength and his elite knights were slaughtered. He escapes death only thanks to his faithful griffin. He has a chest injury (E-1 for the rest of the campaign). The banner of the Lady of the Lake is lost. Moriva burns her like all the loyalist knights - dead or alive - that he captured. King Louen will avenge himself: it is a total war that is preparing.

Battle II-6: The ride of Quenelles
Like his king, Duke Tancred II of Quenelles launches a ride against the duke Huebald of Carcassone who pronounced for Mallobaude. Its ost crosses the river Brienne and enters Carcassone . Huebald does not delay coming up against him.
http://verrahrubicon.free.fr/rdb25_13.html
Both armies are severely wrenched at the end of the battle. However, Tancred and his elite Knights of the Grail were defeated and his great banner captured. The invaders turn back without being pursued, Tancred was only slightly injured and he recovered without harm.

Battle II-5 and II-6

The revelation

Although Mallobaude's allies had won great victories over the loyalist troops attacking him, the renegade lacked enough to create a new impetus and conquer the Kingdom. He decides to reveal his true vampiric nature and that of his ally, the liche Arkhan the Black . Undeads accompany rebels!
